Dandi Yatra motivated people to join freedom movement - Dr. Danish Moin Special lecture as part of Azadi Mahotsav at MANUU

“Dandi Yatra was a protest against the heavy tax imposed by Britishers on salt. This yatra motivated peoplebelonging to different classes and castes to join freedom movement. About ninety thousand people were imprisoned, 110 freedom fighters were killed during this movement and more than 300 people were injured”. Dr. Danish Moin, Head, Department of History, MANUU informed while delivering a special lecture on “Dandi Yatra” yesterday, organized by Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav Committee at Instructional Media Centre, Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU). The lecture was held as per the guidelines issued by the UGC & MHRD, Govt. of India to celebrate 75 years of India’s Independence.

Dr. Danish Moin shared facts about the Dandi Yatra and the reasons for holding it and it’s impact on freedom movement.Dr. Danish said I feel honored to speak about the Dandi March which is also called as Salt Satyagraha or Dandi Satyagraha. It was a non-violent march led by Mahatma Gandhi on March 12, 1930from Sabarmati Ashram to Dandi. About 78 people participated in it and marched around 375 km, he added.

Prof. Siddiqui Mohd. Mahmood in his presidential address elaborated the ideology of Gandhi and relevance of the day. He explained the constant efforts made by Gandhiji for oneness of all religions. The young generation should fulfill the dream of developed country which Gandhiji and other leaders saw for the independent India, he advised.

Prof. Mohammad Fariyad, Chairman, Committee & Head, Dept. of MCJ, introduced the guests and in opening remarks he explained about the importance of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav and threw light on the sacrifices made by the freedom fighters.

The convenor of the programme, Dr. Karan Singh Utwal, Head, Department of Hindi proposed the vote of thanks and beautifully summed up the programme by singing Gandhiji’s favourite bhajan “Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram…”.

Prof. Afroz Alam, Dr Shaik Kamruddin and Ms. Arundhati members of the committee were also present. The lecture was webcasted live on IMC-MANUU youtube channel.
