Training Programme on Compost Making held at MANUU

The Botany section of School of Sciences, Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU) in collaboration with the Engineering section organized Hands on Training Programme on Compost Making from Dry Leaves near University Nursery on May 30, 2023.

 The programme was o

rganized in the run-up to World Environment Day to be observed on 5th June. The Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change is organizing activities for mass mobilization on Mission Life for creating awareness about the mission and inculcating sustainable consumption behavior.

Prof. S. Maqbool Ahmed, Head, Life Sciences and Nodal Officer of B.Voc Programme gave hands on training and explained how to make compost from dry leaves which are rich in different types of Nutrients. Some times leaves may take months for decay and to speedup decomposer is added. He explained different types of compost and their role for the growth and development of plants. Compost is black in colour and rich with nutrients so it is named as “Black Gold”, he said.

Dr. Ira Khan, Assistant Professor (Botany) explained about the ingredients present in the compost. Different types of compost can be prepared by using kitchen waste, she informed.

Mr. Qadeer of Horticulture section explained how the University has made number of compost pits in the different parts of the campus to make use of the compost for the flora of the campus. He demonstrated the complete process in the open field by removing compost with the help of shovel and turned the pile clockwise to mix the compost. Turning the compost pile in a week will speeds up the process and allow the leaves to decompose quickly and uniformly. When compost is ready to use it will emit rich smell and feel thick, he added.
